The alarm was set for 6.00am so we could get up early and on the shinkansen to Hiroshima.
The plan was to squeeze in Hiroshima and Miyajima into one day.
Unfortunately when the alarm doesnt go off and the windows have a blind that pulls down, clicks in and make the whole room pitch black you find yourself sleeping in until nearly 9am lol.
We debated for a while on what to do before making the decision to goto Hiroshima anyway.
First stop was Kyoto station where we grabbed some food for the train ride. I opted for a traditional Bento whilst Sarah went for some Cream and Caramel filled Waffles!
By the time we got on the shinkansen and sat through the 2 hour train ride it was 1.00pm when we arrived. As soon as we got outside the JR station we could smell food,
we disovered a market stall cooking fresh pork yakitori and wild river trout on sqewers.
Sarah opted for the pork whilst i sampled some fresh trout! mmmm delicious.
We soon jumped on the city tram and headed for the A Bomb Dome,
Upon arrival we were greeted by a free tour guide and were lucky enough to meet a survivor of the tragedy. We were given a great account of what went on in Hiroshima that terrible morning and to hear it first hand from a survivor was a privilege. We then made our way down to the Museum and memorial area. The next hour or two was spend reading our way through the museum. This experience was very moving and is something i recommend to everyone visiting japan.
Its hard to believe what the Japanese people would have gone through during this atrocity. How anyone could bring themselves to do such things to other people is really beyond me, but the Japanese.......wtf!, people dont get any better. What the was done in Hiroshima was so wrong and shows what monsters the human race can be. I hope this place serves as a memory and ensures this never happens again. Its upsetting that it could happen to these people and to be honest i had a tear in my eye after reading the sadako story :(
We left Hiroshima soon after the museum and made our way back through the beautiful mountains to Kyoto. Once back at Kyoto station we decided to have dinner at Katsukura, this is the traditional Tonkatsu restaurant which we had read so much about. The food was amazing and the fun of crushing your own sesame and making the sauce all added to the experience.
After dinner we made our way outside to catch a cab and were lucky to see Kyoto Tower up close!
Once back at the hotel my time in the room was short lived as it was onsen time!!
Again we both slept well that night
